PALM SPRINGS, CA – One person was killed and another two were seriously hurt during a rear-end collision Saturday in Palm Springs suspected of being caused by intoxicated driving.
According to MyNewsLA, the crash happened on Sunrise Way near E Palm Canyon Drive at about 9 p.m., when 57-year-old Los Angeles resident Kevin Atteberry crashed into the rear of another vehicle. Police believe Atteberry was under the influence when the crash happened.
The other driver, identified as Erik Verdian, of Burbank, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Atteberry and a passenger in Verdian’s vehicle were taken to the hospital to receive treatment for severe injuries.
The collision led to a separate chain-reaction crash involving two other vehicles that were stopped at the same intersection. No injuries were reported, however, from this accident.
Police believe Atteberry may also have been involved in a hit-and-run accident at Ramon Road and Sunrise Way prior to the fatal collision.
Atteberry will be taken into police custody following his release from the hospital. Due to a previous DUI conviction, he will be held on suspicion of murder.
